I had dreamt of the wave a million times before.
Standing in the backyard, I would watch the dykes give way.
The sea would rumble and scream.
The sky would turn the deepest grey, then shatter into a thousand pieces.
Thor would join the party.
Certain death would come my way.
But once the water reached me, it was reduced to nothing more than a mere puddle, just enough to wetten my bare feet.
Luctor et Emergo — I had survived the water once again.
I could start my day with a morning coffee.
This time was different.
I watched the dykes give way in the backyard; I watched the sky turn grey.
The water came for me with certainty and vigor, the smell of salt lingering in my nose.
Not in the mood for the dream, I pinched myself to wake up.
It didn't work: the smell of salt stayed, rain drenching me whole.
The nightmare had manifested.
The sea had come to swallow me.
