About EX

EXutrecht

EXutrecht (formerly Stichting EX and EXbunker) was established in 2014 with 'EXbunker' as a space for exhibitions and expression. EXbunker is housed in a historical monument—an old World War II bunker—in Wilhelminapark, Utrecht. Initially, EXbunker started as a private initiative. Due to high visitor interest (an average of 300 visitors per month) and the project's growing scope, Foundation EX was created.

In 2018, Foundation EX opened a second exhibition space in one of the former prostitution boats of the Zandpad, named 'EXboot'. It is located on the quay at De Nijverheid. One of the foundation's main purposes is to raise funds and donations to make the project financially sustainable on a non-profit basis. To support this mission, a cultural ANBI status was applied for and granted.

In 2025 'EXtern' was founded with the goal of letting artist arrange exhibitions in public spaces.

Mission and Goals

Foundation EX aims to promote art and culture in the broadest sense and contribute to preserving a diverse cultural landscape. The foundation provides a platform for emerging artists who create thought-provoking and accessible work but do not yet have a place in museums or galleries.

Our goal is to give young artists the space to position and profile themselves. In line with this objective, Foundation EX organizes performances, exhibitions, readings, presentations, lectures, courses, and workshops.

Foundation EX is open to everyone. Visiting Foundation EX is accessible and welcoming. We strive to attract a diverse audience—young and old, art experts, enthusiasts, and the simply curious. We also want to bring art to people who might not typically visit exhibitions. In short: art and culture for all.

Entry to the foundation's exhibition spaces is free for the public. Artists are asked to act as hosts during opening hours. In 2017, we also offered coaching to artists based on their needs, supporting them in this phase of their artistic careers. Exhibiting artists receive a budget for the realization of their work, with strong encouragement to create new pieces specifically for EXbunker or EXboot.

Since there is no admission fee and artists do not pay rent for the use of the exhibition spaces, our revenue primarily comes from donations and subsidies.
