Interested in spaces of convergence between different facets of knowledge, Mazen Al Ashkar seeks a relationality to the unprecedented ecological, economical and sociopolitical predicaments by playing with elements of and inbetween the binaries of Humanism, such as the rational-irrational, the scientific-superstitious. Seeking an interdisciplinary practice his work takes shape through multimedia installations, video and sound art.

Born in Syria in 1989, graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University in 2013 and received an MFA in Artistic Research from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague in 2021.

In the EXBUNKER he will be experimenting with a sonic interplay with infrastructural material, listening to and playing with byproducts of systems of connectivity and utility.

the escalator is always rolling

Thomas L. Fontein

Every day the same game repeats itself, at the same time and place as yesterday, just with different players. Your body gets absorbed into the flow of the rush hour, while your mind is disconnected. As the train leaves the station, you take your seat in the midst of absent gazes. ‘the escalator is always rolling’ is an exploration of the mental numbness of repetition, predictability and the drag of going somewhere that doesn't fulfill you.
