Yazan Maksoiud was born in Damascus, but he is not a Damascene. They told him he was an immigrant from Salamiyah – a village in the middle of Syria, but also he was not the son of Salamiyah. Yazan arrived in Europe after the outbreak of the Syrian war as a son of Syria, but he was surprised that he only knew a little about Syria. Today he lives in the Netherlands, but he is also not Dutch. In the end, it seems he is the son of all these lands together.
“These stories made me travel with a nomadic identity, which was assembled and sustained by them altogether. Throughout all my travels, I have always been fascinated by the continuous fight against patriarchal powers and their relation to the global inequalities that torment people’s lives and cultures. So, It became my primary anxiety to follow this patriarchal authority and to engage in every action that uncovers and breaks it through Art. I always want to discover how I can contribute to creating a more harmonious and just life for all through my Art.”
