Alicia Hofstra

Alicia Hofstra (born April 15, 2003) is a textile artist and a graduate of HKU Fine Art. She lives and works in Wassenaar, where receiving the Wassenaar Culture Prize in 2020 gave her an early boost into the art world.

Her installations are characterized by a strong focus on craftsmanship, technique, and detail. As an agnostic, she draws much of her inspiration from her religious upbringing, combined with the specific hyperfixations she experiences as a neurodivergent person during the creative process. These influences give rise to strange and immersive worlds that exist in the space between religion and magic—pulling the viewer out of reality and into something otherworldly.

The Altar

Alicia Hofstra

The Altar is a textile installation that explores the Alicia Hofstra's relationship with the concept of ‘worship.’ The work incorporates numerous references to their past within Protestantism, alongside personal hyperfixations, which are presented as alternative forms of devotion. Drawing inspiration from the overwhelming visual richness of castles and ornately decorated churches, the installation seeks to immerse the viewer in a similarly intense atmosphere. Viewers are invited to navigate this eclectic altar and reflect on their own position within it.
